Bloody Streets

The northern streets of Marvel City remained still, lifeless, and unreassuringly quiet now a vast majority of the Yellow Eyes had ventured to the south side, though it took more than a crowd to populate a city. There would undoubtedly be more of them.

Alex thought about exactly that as he stood outside the rear of the kennel building. He leant against the rough brick surface of the exterior wall as his mind played games with him, relentlessly depicting a myriad of possibilities and questions about whether his mission could succeed after so many close calls.

The fog bank from the mountains still remained but he could just about make out the rooftops of the many surrounding buildings. That’s where he’d rather be at present, high above the ground was his preferred sniper’s position. It was that longing that made his eyes drift towards such locations rather than where his concerns should be - the dangerous streets before him, yet during his gaze he saw a sudden movement in the corner of his eye. He raised the rifle resting across his arms and fixed an eye to the scope to view the rooftop diagonally right of his position. A dark shadow moved out of sight and behind a ventilation shaft. Alex strained his eyes for a clearer view, but a further gathering of mountain mist restricted him.

“What’s the matter?” Natasha asked.

“Thought I saw something,” he replied, and rubbed his eyes. Sleep deprivation was the one aspect of torture Alex would say he would be affected by the most. He didn’t feel particularly tired, but then perhaps the last rush of adrenaline was still keeping him on his feet. Natasha tried to look through the mist herself. It was too difficult to see anything that far away now, and since they were hidden by it themselves, it should have been a comforting fact.

“Forget about it,” he told her, and moved his hand down by his side where a tiny radio device was strapped to his uniform. He pressed a small button to disable the mute function and took a small clip-type device from a small pocket by his waist and secured it in his ear.

“For some reason I thought you weren’t carrying one,” Natasha commented.

“It’s essential...and they work like any cell phone in reality. The thing just vibrates if someone tries to get through. Fucking ear piece drives me nuts though!” he explained, and turned his head to begin a conversation with his team, “Yasha, this is Alex. The mist is getting worse now so we can’t be sure, but a flare drew two crowds way south of here, which is roughly Second and Powell.

He waited for a response before Yasha’s voice came through crystal clear.

“Roger that...we’re heading out now. Keep us updated, over.” Yasha responded.

“Will do, over and out.” Alex ended with, and turned the mute function back on. “You ready to go?” he asked Natasha.

“Always!”

Yasha and his team began their journey north and back past Main Street. The mist was thinner this side of town but a strong breeze was bringing more down from the mountains.
